From Drainage Problems to a Beautiful, Functional Backyard: The Clark Project

For this project, our team addressed serious drainage issues, improved lawn health, and created a durable, visually appealing walkway — turning a problem-prone backyard into a space the family can use and enjoy for years to come.

Solving Drainage Issues & Enhancing Functionality

The client was dealing with standing water in the backyard, a muddy side path, and uneven soil that made lawn maintenance difficult. Our team provided a full solution that combined drainage, grading, sod installation, and hardscape improvements to create a functional, low-maintenance, and aesthetically pleasing backyard.

Drainage Solutions: Protecting the Home & Yard

To prevent water from pooling near the foundation, we extended all front and backyard downspouts using 350 feet of 4” black solid drain pipe. We installed 3 pop-ups, 3 T’s, and 3 Y’s to redirect water safely away from the home. These solutions not only protect the structure but also improve overall landscape health by preventing erosion and water damage.

Walkway Installation: A Functional & Attractive Path

The side of the house had become a muddy, unusable path. We created a 70-foot by 5-foot walkway using irregular flagstone paver steppers, a trench barrier, and 5 tons of 67 stone. The result is a durable, attractive route from the front to the backyard, making the space more accessible and visually cohesive.

Backyard Grading: Leveling & Improving Drainage

Compacted soil and uneven terrain had caused poor drainage and standing water. We used a Harley rake to decompact the soil, added 1 truckload each of screen fill dirt and Lawn Max soil, and carefully graded the backyard to slope away from the house. This ensures water flows correctly and provides a smooth, level surface for the lawn and recreational use.

Sod Installation: Establishing a Lush, Healthy Lawn

We installed 2,000 square feet of elite tall fescue sod, accompanied by starter fertilizer, lime, fungicide, and insecticide. This ensures rapid establishment, healthy growth, and a vibrant green lawn that can withstand Charlotte’s climate and seasonal changes.

Additional Enhancements: Finishing Touches

To complete the transformation, we removed two small trees that crowded the yard and applied 10 bales of pine needles around the shed. These finishing touches improved both aesthetics and ease of maintenance, giving the backyard a polished, well-cared-for appearance.
